Visa-free, affordable and astonishingly beautiful — here's everything you need to know before your first trip.
Uzbekistan has quietly become one of Central Asia's easiest countries to visit. Citizens of dozens of countries now enter visa-free, the high-speed Afrosiyob train links the major cities in hours, and prices remain wonderfully low.
Start in Tashkent, the green modern capital, then ride the rails to Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva — the classic Silk Road triangle. Pack modest, comfortable clothing, carry some cash (som) for bazaars, and learn a few words of Uzbek; locals are famously hospitable and will often invite you for tea.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the kindest weather. Allow 8–10 days to see the highlights without rushing.
