If Samarkand dazzles, Bukhara enchants. Its old town is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Central Asia, compact enough to explore on foot and layered with more than two millennia of history.
The Kalyan Minaret, so magnificent that Genghis Khan reportedly spared it, towers over the Po-i-Kalyan complex. Around the Lyab-i-Hauz pool, mulberry-shaded teahouses still serve plov as they have for centuries, while the trading domes once sold silk, spices and gold.
Stay in a restored merchant's house, lose yourself in the artisan workshops, and end each evening by the pool with a pot of green tea.
