Uzumfermer Winery Day Tour

Uzbekistan has grown grapes for as long as anyone has written about it, and the vineyards in the foothills east of Tashkent are still worked by families rather than corporations. Uzumfermer, at Kibray, is one of the small family wineries that has opened its gates to visitors, and it is an easy half-hour out of the capital.

You walk the garden and the vine rows with the people who tend them, follow the fruit through the press, the tanks and the cellar, and hear the practical side of home winemaking that most tastings skip. The visit ends with a guided tasting of five wines and lunch on the farm.
