Overview

Samarkand sits closer to the mountains than most visitors realise. This day trip crosses the border into the Fann Mountains for the turquoise cascade of Haft-Kul — seven lakes strung one above the other along the Shing river, each a different shade of green and blue, with stone villages, walnut groves and a riverside lunch along the way.

A fully escorted experience: one long day with an English-speaking guide, all transport and border formalities handled for you. Please bring your passport, as the route leaves Uzbekistan for the day and you will need whatever visa or entry permission applies to your nationality; your consultant will confirm the requirements when you book.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Samarkand – Penjikent – Haft-Kul – Samarkand

You leave Samarkand early and drive east to the Jartepa border crossing, where your guide helps you through the formalities. Beyond it the road runs through Penjikent, one of the oldest towns in the region, and then turns south into the Shing river valley. From here the track climbs past the lakes one by one — Mijgon, Soya, Hushyor, Nofin, Khurdak and the long blue expanse of Marguzor — each dammed by ancient rockfalls and each a different colour. There is time to walk beside the water and photograph the Fann Mountains above, and lunch is taken by the river. In the late afternoon you return the same way, reaching Samarkand in the evening.
