Overview

Ride foothill roads through orchards and villages east of Tashkent — support vehicle, picnic lunch and tea with a local family. The Parkent district lies about an hour from the capital and is known across Uzbekistan for its vineyards, which is how the village of Shampan came by a name borrowed from Champagne.

The route covers roughly 40 km of rolling hills, mostly on quiet asphalt, with a mix of climbs and long descents through Krasnogorsk, Namdanak and Shampan up to the forestry village of Sukok. A support vehicle shadows the group the whole way, so you can ride as much or as little of it as you wish. The day finishes at the Physics-Sun Institute of Material Science, the vast solar furnace built into the hillside above Parkent.

The tour runs from mid-April to the end of October and suits anyone comfortable in the saddle. Bicycle, helmet and an English-speaking guide are included.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Tashkent – Krasnogorsk – Shampan – Sukok – Sun Institute – Tashkent

You leave Tashkent by car at around 8am for the Parkent district (60 km, one hour). At the entrance to Krasnogorsk, a former mining town, you transfer to bicycles and run through a check of bike and equipment before setting off. The road rolls on through Namdanak and the vineyards of Shampan, then climbs steadily to the mountainside village of Sukok, surrounded by the conifers of its forestry centre. You stop here for a picnic lunch and tea with a local family, then enjoy a long descent through orchards and open hills. A short transfer takes you up to the Physics-Sun Institute of Material Science before the drive back to Tashkent.
